Sexual Violence and the Legal System

Figuring out whether to pursue routes within the legal system after an assault can be a difficult decision. We offer you support and hope that these pages here can be useful as you think through all the options available to you. Many members of our team are survivors and loved ones who have had successful experiences achieving some form of justice within the legal system. Some of us are also survivors and loved ones who have ultimately decided that not pursuing legal action was the best choice for healing. This can be due to a number of personal reasons or because of justifiable skepticism that the legal system would not be an effective avenue for achieving justice, especially for certain survivors that face institutionalized discrimination based on race, gender, sexuality, and many others. Regardless, whichever path you choose, you should feel confident that you know what is best for yourself.
